Speaking before the start of the season, ten Hag insisted that he was not concerned about Manchester United’s lack of progress in the transfer market.
He said you don’t need any player, you need the right player. It’s what we’re working for.
Bubba Wallace speaks on his second-place finish at Michigan
It seems that attitudes have changed at United after the demoralising home defeat to BRIGHTON. Before the match had even finished, there was talk of an offer for Bologna’s Marko Arnautovic, Ten Hag having had to start without a strikers due to Anthony Martial’s injury and the lack of fitness of Portugal’s top scorer. According to widespread reports in England, the Red Devil are interested in signing the player, who will be released by the Bianconeri a year before his contract expires.
It appears that any work United have done on long-term transfer targets has gone out the window. “The right player” is now just the player that’s for sale, according to the Lionel Hutz real-estate phrasebook.
An unknown quantity at this level is a player with more than 250 appearances in Ligue 1 and Serie A, six league titles to his name, and 29 France caps. Few, if any, other top sides seem to be interested in him, as he doesn’t want him and they don’t want him.
Why are they trying to get him? What could he do to help Ten Hag? The risks are broken down by TheSporting News.

Adrien Rabiot career: From PSG prodigy to Juve problems
City of Light’s shining star
The golden boy of French football was known as Rabiot. He spent a few months at Manchester City before joining Paris Saint-Germain in 2012 after a long career in youth football.
Carlo Ancelotti gave him a debut in the senior set-up against Bordeaux in August 2012 when he was 17 years old. It’s ironic that the man who dropped Jeremy Menez for bad behavior and left Marco Verratti out of the team for the game was the one who chose Rabiot for the game.
As the manager merry-go-round got into full swing at Parc des Princes, Rabiot established himself as a key component of the team. The shadow of his mother had begun to emerge as problems behind the scenes began to emerge.
Mother, may I?
The coach was confronted in the car park of the club’s training ground by an irate person after he was dropped for a game. Veronique Rabiot said you can’t do that to him. I’m not going to agree to that. A new contract was given to the player in weeks.
Mrs Rabiot has operated as her son’s agent since his youth football days and has often been accused of being overly presence. Rabiot didn’t make the France squad for the tournament because he played 42 times.
The president of Paris Saint-Germain had seen a future captain in the young player, who was a hometown figurehead, to lead a team of stars. Although a regular player under Unai Emery, Rabiot and his mother refused to extend their contract, stoking tensions with the club’s hierarchy. Rabiot told the coach that he wouldn’t be able to follow the training programme and he watched from home as France won the tournament.
The player was dropped for being late to team meetings after Thomas Tuchel replaced Emery and convinced him not to seek a transfer. He had to train with the reserves while his contract ran out. In March, after Manchester United somehow eliminated Paris Saint-Germain from the Champions League round of 16 on away goals, Rabiot was partying at a nightclub after liking a post by Evra. He was suspended by the club because of his attitude and lack of professionalism.
At this point, Barcelona were weighing up an offer for the player, but ended up signing Frenkie de Jong from Ajax. In July, eight months after his last appearance for Paris Saint-Germain, Rabiot signed a free transfer for the Italian club.
Turin Breaks
It seemed as though a move to Italy and the Bianconeri would help breathe new life into his career, and he has played 129 times for the Bianconeri, winning the Serie A title and Supercoppa Italiana.
He has been a part of a club that is in a state of change. After Massimiliano Allegri’s five-year spell in charge ended, the demands and methods of the coach and the board never married up. After finishing fourth in the league, Inter Milan ran away with the title, despite the fact that the youth team’s success was not enough to make up for it. Some of the players didn’t understand the plan.
Despite playing 32 times in the league last season, Rabiot failed to improve the mood as there was criticism of his pragmatic gameplan throughout the past year. With all of the new players signed this summer, and with just a year left on Rabiot’s deal, the Bianconeri are ready to sell.
Why does Ten Hag want to sign Rabiot?
It seems strange that Ten Hag would abandon long-term transfer planning just to add another body to his desperately light midfield, given the baggage that comes with Rabiot, the intransigence of his mother and a feeling of unfulfilled promise.
Rabiot is still an excellent footballer. He is strong, combative, but with an elegance in possession, United simply don’t have a central-midfield option. He played as an emergency left-wing-back for France in Euro 2020, as well as being part of a deep-lying pivot on the left of a central trio. When he was suspended for half the season, he played fewer than 21 league matches for the first time in nine years.
If Ten Hag can keep Rabiot fully engaged, the 27-year-old could prove to be an upgrade on United’s options in the middle of the park.
Adrien Rabiot contract, fee and wages
According to The Manchester Evening News, United agreed to pay an initial fee of as much as 18 million dollars for Rabiot, which could go up to 20 million dollars.
The player and his mother have to agree on personal terms. He makes around 7m per year with the Bianconeri, which equates to around £113,000 per week, and United will need to offer an improvement to those terms.
