The representatives of Spanish football walked away from the awards ceremony with all but one of the top prizes.
Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema was named Men’s Player of the Year and Carlo Ancelotti accepted the award for Men’s Coach of the Year, while Spain international Alexia Putellas claimed the honors as Women’s Player of the Year.
Benzema was central to the effort that saw Real Madrid lift the trophy for the 14th time and win their 35th LaLiga title.
The French player had 44 goals in 46 appearances.
In his second stint at the helm for Real Madrid, Carlo Ancelotti leads all coaches with four European titles and is the only manager to have won titles in five different European leagues.
Barcelona won the Women’s European Championship in 2020-2021 and finished second in the last season, losing the final to Olympique Lyon.
One of his Real Madrid teammates, goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, and Manchester City’s Kevin de Bruyne were nominated with Benzema for Men’s Player of the Year.
On the women’s side, Putellas was the winner over England’s Beth Mead and German international Lena Oberdorf.
Man City won the English title for the fourth time in five years, but it was not enough to beat out the other two managers, Jrgen Klopp of Liverpool and Carlo Ancelotti of Paris Saint-Germain. EFE jjl/DR
