It has been three years since Harry Maguire overtook him as the most expensive defender. Even though the Manchester United captain’s reputation has plummeted after his own £80m switch 18 months later, he won’t be too upset at the loss of the title.
The centre-half for the Reds could be about to fall further down as the Blues look to strengthen their defence. The London club recently received a bid in excess of £70m for Fofana, but it was rejected.

Reports claim that the valuation of the Foxes is as much as £85m, with it being suggested that they are currently holding out for that much. According to the Evening Standard, they are reluctant to make the 21-year-old the world’s most expensive central defender having seen the criticism faced by him.
Trent Alexander-Arnold will listen to other’s advice.
Rio Ferdinand said he didn’t like some of the players.
It remains to be seen if Fofana leapfrogs Van Dijk in order to make the move to Chelsea. The hefty fee required to acquire the Frenchman will show a clear change in the transfer market, with more potential than proven quality.

The France Under-21s international is a very talented player. Having only just returned from a broken leg which ruled him out until March, a fee in the region of £80m is a serious investment for a player with little experience.

At the weekend, Fofana made his 51st appearance for the Foxes, having joined them from Saint-Etienne in October 2020. He only made 20 Ligue 1 appearances in two seasons in France, meaning a switch in the region of £85m to CHELSEA would leave the defender with 81 career appearances and roughly £120m in transfer fees.
Prior to Ibrahima Konate’s move toLiverpool, he had made over 100 appearances for Sochaux andRB Leipzig. Twenty nine Reds appearances and two domestic cup wins later, the centre-back is a full France international and holding out hope of competing at the World Cup in Qatar.
It would be the tenth time in the past 20 years that a record for the most expensive defender in the world has been broken. When Walter Samuel was signed from Boca Juniors to break the record for the highest amount of money paid for a single player back in the summer of 2000, the figures involved were around 13 million dollars.
Rio Ferdinand overtook the Argentina international when joining Leeds United in an £18m deal from West Ham United in November 2000, and while he would lose the tag to 29-year-old World Cup and European Championships winner Lilian Thuram when the Frenchman traded Parma for Bianconeri in a £23m deal

Paris Saint-Germain signed Thiago Silva from AC Milan in the summer of 2012 in order to break Ferdinand’s record of 23 years in a row. The record was broken two years later when they parted with £50m to sign David Luiz from the World Cup.
The world record for a defender was broken by Man City in July of last year when they signed Benjamin Mendy from AC Monaco for £52m. The record would never have been the Frenchman’s had he not been forced to withdraw his interest in Van Dijk the previous month.
The Reds ended their interest in the centre-back after the Saints reported them to the league and asked them to investigate an alleged illegal approach.
An official statement from the club said that they would like to put on record their regret over the recent media speculation about player transfers between the two clubs.
We would like to apologize to the owner, board of directors and fans of Saints for any misunderstanding about van Dijk. We can confirm that we ended interest in the player.
This was discovered by Manchester United when they paid £80m to sign England international Harry Maguire from LEICESTER, with the Foxes on the verge of benefiting again as they pursue Fofana.
Since replacing Van Dijk as the most expensive defender in the world, Maguire has struggled to live up to such standards, but that is not the case for most of the record-holders over the past two decades.
Samuel was a 22-year-old Argentina international when he went to Europe. He spent a season with Real Madrid before moving on to Inter Milan, where he won five Serie A titles, three Coppa Italias and the European Championship.
Ferdinand was already an England international with 127 appearances to his name when he joined United. He became one of the best defenders in the world after 12 seasons with Manchester United and won six titles, including six in the English premier league.
Thuram was already one of the best players in the world when he joined the Bianconeri, thanks to his international success with France and respected club record at Monaco and Parma. The Calciopoli match-fixing scandal saw the Old Lady demoted and the defender finish his career with Barcelona, but he went on to win two Serie A titles.
Before joining Paris Saint-Germain, Thiago Silva had established himself as one of the world’s best defenders for AC Milan and Brazil, winning the Serie A with the latter. He made over 300 appearances for the club over the course of eight seasons, during which time the French outfit dominated France and won seven Ligue 1 titles.
He won the European Super Cup at the age of 37 and also won the Copa America with Brazil in the year 2019.
David Luiz was 27 years old when he was in France. He’d add two more titles to his collection with Paris Saint-Germain and then return to his previous club, the Blues, to win another title and a trophy. The 35-year-old is back in Brazil with his new team, Flamengo, after spending two seasons with the English club, where he won another FA Cup.
Van Dijk has established himself as the best defender in the world and has become an English, European and World champion atLiverpool, making 183 appearances across four and a half seasons while also winning the FA Cup, League Cup and European Super Cup.
The 29-year-old is up against to match the standards of his predecessors as the world’s most expensive defender, even though he might be United captain and has made 145 appearances across three seasons.
Fofana has to live up to the tag and deliver on his potential. The Frenchman holds out for a record-breaking transfer of his own, now that the Frenchman has inadvertently contributed to his hefty fee, he will be hoping to replicate the success of the Dutchman’s Anfield career as he holds out for a record-breaking transfer of his own
